In the area of the extinct College of St. Paul, stands the small traditional Chapel of St. Francis Xavier.


The Library of the Directorate of Archives & Archaeology is categorized as one of the Research Reference Libraries in the State having rich collection of reference books in different disciplines like Indo-Portuguese History, Indian History, Art, Architecture, Paintings, Archival Science, Archaeology, Numismatics, Iconography, Epigraphy, Ethnography, Travel and Voyages, Religion, Biography and other allied subjects. As the Directorate of Archives & Archaeology has been recognized as an affiliated research centre for the Universities of Goa, Mumbai, Lisbon in Portugal and other prominent Universities in India and abroad, with its unique, rich and rare Library holdings in South-East Asia, this Library caters to the needs of Scholars as well as research students in their search and research.

Organizational Setup

The Librarian is assisted by an Assistant Librarian and two Library Assistants

Uniqueness of the Library

  • Rarity of the Books: This is the only Archival Library apart from Torre de Tombo in Portugal having rare books on Indo-Portuguese History.
  • As Library has been established before the Liberation of Goa, has specific books on European languages like Portuguese, French, Spanish and Dutch.
  • No other Library of Archives in India have Boletin Oficials, Diaro do Governo etc except Goa Archives Library.


The Library is providing services like current awareness service, bibliographic service, circulation, reference and referral service, paper clipping, reprographic services like photocopies, computer printouts, xeroxing, microfilms etc. Information regarding new arrivals of books and journals are made available to the users through display stand and by arranging exhibitions from time to time.

  • Library timing for Public / Scholar - 9.45 a.m. to 12.45 p.m. & 2.15 p.m. to 5.15 p.m.
  • Books in English, Marathi & Konkani - approximately 10,902.
  • Books in Portuguese, Latin, French and other languages - approximately 45,000
  • Diaro de Governo - approximately 292 volumes
  • Bulletin Official / Official Gazette - approximately 1000
  • 13 different Titles of Journals / Periodicals.
  • 4 English and 2 Marathi local newspapers.
